CERN is one of the world's largest
scientific laboratories and an outstanding example of international collaboration
of its many member states. (The acronym CERN comes from the earlier French
title: "Conseil Europeen pour la Recherche Nucleaire"). The European Research
Institute for High Energy Physics is doing basic research in the field
of interaction of subatomic particles and their properties. Large accelerators
(LEP,
27 km circumference) and detectors are necessary to reveal the basic
structure of matter.
(QSW) Quadrics Supercomputers
World Ltd. - is a joint venture between Alenia Aerospazio SpA (70%), a
FINMECCANICA Company, Italy, and Meiko (30%), UK, established in April
1996. Mission statement for QSW is to pursue the market of high performance
computing. QSW draws on the experiences, know-how and technologies of its
parent companies, in order to design, produce, commercialize and service
advanced state-of-the-art high performance computing systems.
DESY ,The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron
DESY in Hamburg is a national research center for particle physics and
synchrotron radiation research financed by the public. DESY offers the
opportunity to study the fundamental questions about the structure of matter,
the microcosm and thereby the formation of universe to physicists from
all over the world - east and west. To this end DESY runs the electron-positron
storage ring DORIS and the proton-electron storage ring HERA with the experiments
H1, ZEUS and HERMES.
HCSA The Hellenic Company for
Space Applications S.A. was established in 1995 by ALENIA SPAZIO S.p.A.,
the Italian State owned Space Company of the FINMECCANICA Group (56.000
employees, 8 billion US$ sales in 1994), and COMMERSA Ltd., a consulting
company based in Athens - Greece. The Scope of the Company is to provide
"turn key" Systems and Services in Space Telecommunications and Remote
Sensing for the Hellenic and World-wide markets.
HNMS The Hellenic National Meteorological Service , has as main duty
the weather forecasting for the Greek territory. The expanding activities
of HNMS in the forecasting domain, comprising use analysis and forecast
data, images for numerical simulations, satellite data, images from weather
radar and meteorological observation, produce large amounts of archived
data.
AMC The Athens Medical Centre S.A., founded in 1983, has created an
excellent reputation in health sector at international level with the successful
operation of two hospital units in Athens and a Medical Centre in Moscow.
Today, AMC rapidly proceeds with the construction of a new modern hospital
in Thessalonica, the Interbalkan Medical Centre, projected to be operational
in the summer of 1998.
